2013 Events Year starts with a Sustainable Bang

The new teaching year has started and Ryde Events students started with...an event! Week one for all students involved working on a conference at College. The event, Sustainability in Education attracted 160 delegates and was held in the main building as well as Horticulture. Students gained 'instant' experience in registration, event co-ordination, walkie-talkies and f&b service.

Delegates were wowed by the professionalism of our team-and were shocked to discover that in many cases, it was the students first day at college! Not only did we use all mainstream Ryde students, we enlisted the help of Northern Beaches Advanced Diploma students to help too-the first time we have worked co-operatively with our sister college. Another highlight of the event was Golf buggy training, where our students were trained and tested in the 'art and science' of driving these popular vehicles. Needless to say, there were no shortage of drivers volunteering to whizz round campus at a moments notice.

Feedback from all involved has been really good, and we have certainly set the tone for another busy year at Ryde Events.

Ryde Diploma students relaxing after wowwing 2000 competitors, VIPs and guests at the closing ceremony for the WoldSkills National competition at the iconic Capitol Theatre in Sydney. The team developed a 'night with the stars' concept which included a Hollywood walk of Fame on the 'sidewalk' outside the theatre, star arrangements in the foyers and a twinkling starcloth backdrop on the stage. The biggest challenge was to present 160 medals in 50 categories without losing audience interest of taking to much time. The challege was met and the ceremony was completed within 2.5 hours. The threatre management had never had an event like it and have already 'stolen' several student ideas for use in upcoming productions. This was the second WorldSkills closing ceremony that was organised by Ryde students, the first being in 2008-it is always nice to get a return gig from a satisfied client!

WorldSkills Headlines student experience in 2012

The National WorldSkills competition is always a major event in the training calender. This year it is being held in Sydney and Ryde Events students have again been asked to help in the design and delivery of the closing ceremony.

The success of the 2008 event which we organized is still being held up as an exemplar of how a 'sometimes not very exciting event' can be made dynamic and interesting-in fact the recent London international competition stole/cut n paste several of our ideas.

Students will be working with venues, suppliers and WorldSkills to develop an exciting evenings activities in September.
